Maximum Speed Limits

Did you know that even where a speed limit sign is not posted, you are expected to know how fast you are legally allowed to drive? Maryland law provides a list of maximum lawful speed limits throughout the state. Here they are:

  1. 15 miles an hour in alleys in Baltimore County
  2. 30 miles an hour on:
    1. All highways in a business district; and
    2. Undivided highways in a residential district
  3. 35 miles an hour on divided highways in a residential district
  4. 50 miles an hour on undivided highways in other locations
  5. 55 miles an hour on divided highways in other locations

Also, speed limits may not exceed 55 miles an hour on any highway in Maryland that is not an interstate highway or expressway, or would violate federal code. A maximum speed limit of more than 65 miles per hour may not be established on any highway in the state.
