Maryland law allows a judge to enter a temporary protective order to protect a person from immediate abuse. However, it is not meant to be a permanent fix. The protective order is only effective for a maximum of seven days. It can be extended by the Maryland judge as needed, but not for a period exceeding six months. Today I received a phone call on my cell phone from a divorce client. He didn't have any emergency, he just had a simple question that he needed answered. When he called, I was at Bass Pro Shops with my son just spending some quality time together. Why do I mention this? I mention this because most of my lawyer friends, if not all, would never take such a call on a Sunday. But I do not agree with that at all. The phone call took about 45 seconds. I, like many of you, watched the Casey Anthony trial unfold on tv. I suppose it is a little different for me, as a lawyer who has tried criminal cases, than it is for you. To me, it was obvious that she was going to be found not guilty of murder. Remember folks, just because she was found not guilty doesn't mean she didn't do it.
